Four Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

It is important to remember the meaning behind Memorial Day. Today we honor those brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. Here are a few ways to show your appreciation and celebrate Memorial Day.

Contact Families

If you know the family of a fallen soldier, reach out to them. You can write a letter, give them a call, or visit them. Today means more to them than barbeques and parties. It is a reminder of the sacrifice their spouse, parent, or child made. Showing support and kindness on Memorial Day will be a welcome gesture.

Volunteer to Place Flags

Placing flags on the graves of soldiers is a great sign of respect. Many cemeteries and veterans organizations will be doing this on Memorial Day. You can contact your local legion or AMVETS to see if, and when they will be visiting grave sites. To learn the appropriate way to place a flag on the grave of a soldier click here.

Watch a Documentary

There are many amazing documentaries on the history of the United States Military. The History Channel usually has a great lineup of shows focused on past wars with firsthand accounts. One of the best ways to honor the memory of fallen soldiers is educating yourself on history and the battles those brave men and women fought.

Have a Moment of Silence

Many people have backyard cookouts with friends and family on Memorial Day. If you do, when everyone arrives and before you eat, have a moment of silence for those soldiers who gave their lives, all throughout our country’s history, so that we might have the freedom to enjoy the food we will all be eating today.

On Memorial Day and throughout the year, it is important to give back. At SeaComm, we are focused on making our communities a better place to live by carrying out the credit union philosophy, “People Helping People.” Click here to learn about our most recent donations and acts of kindness!
