Four Tips to Lower Internet Costs

The internet has become a necessity. Most people use the internet every day, so here are some tips to lower that monthly bill.

Low-Income Plans

Most of the major internet providers have assistance programs for low-income households. Reach out to your provider and ask about their program, or click here for the Federal Communications Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Program. These programs provide a discount of up to $30 for eligible households.

Lower Your Speed

If you don’t use the internet a lot, or you live by yourself or with one other person, you probably don’t need a higher speed internet plan. Depending on your internet carrier, lowering your speed can significantly drop the price of your monthly bill.

Change Providers

Areas with more than one internet service provider have competition, which means you might find promotional offers if you switch. Research the other companies in your area to see what they can do for you. After you see what’s available, call your current provider and let them know you plan to switch. This might get them to make you an offer to stay. So whether you actually switch or not, your bill could be lower in the end anyway.

Purchase Your Own Equipment

If you got a modem and router from your provider, part of your internet bill are equipment charges. These can add $5-$20 a month to your bill. You can find a perfectly good router and modem for about $200, and less if they’re used and refurbished. This might be more of an upfront cost, but you’ll save in the long run.
