Good Habits for a Happy Retirement

Here are a few good habits to build for a happy and healthy retirement.

Spend Time with Family and Friends

The happiest and most successful retirees state that being around the people you love is a great way to find fulfillment after you’ve finished your career. The contact is great for the spirit, and having regular activity will keep you physically and mentally fit.

Spend Less

Living on a fixed income is typical for retirees, so figuring out a budget and sticking to it is important. Look at your monthly bills, and what you have coming in, in order to see what you’ve got left. People with more life experience tend to spend less on impulse buys and are familiar with organizing and planning finances. Keeping track of your spending will help you spend less.

Keep Learning

One of the things that might happen as we age is cognitive decline. Memory loss, confusion, and frustration can be combatted with learning. Exercise your brain with word puzzles, math, riddles, or even acquiring new skills. Find groups where you can do this with other people, or events like trivia nights, and have some social engagement. If you’d like to pursue some higher learning, there are some schools that allow seniors to audit classes for free.

If you plan on retiring, but not anytime soon, one of the best ways to save is your employer’s 401(K) plan. Setting up automatic deductions from your paycheck means you’ll be saving with each payment. You can also set up an increase in your contributions year after year to match with raises in pay. You might consider opening a Roth or traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) if you don’t have access to a 401(K). To learn more about IRAs with SeaComm, click here.
