Buying a car, whether new or used, is a big deal. The last thing you want to do is make an expensive mistake, so here are four you should definitely avoid.

Monthly Payment vs. Total Cost
One of the most common questions salespeople ask has to do with what you can afford each month. This might lead them to suggest a longer loan period which will make your monthly payments look more affordable. However, in the long run you’ll be paying more. Make sure you know how much you are willing to spend as far as total cost. This will help you stick to your budget.

Wait to Mention Your Trade-In
Don’t talk about your current vehicle right away. This could hurt your negotiations. If the salesperson you work with knows about your trade-in they might increase the starting price. Once you’ve agreed on the price that you feel is right, then you can mention your current vehicle. Get your best deal, then use your trade-in to make that price lower.

Too Many Bells and Whistles
You’ve got your price, now it’s time for the paperwork. This is where some extra costs might show up. Look over the contract to see each figure and what it’s for. Some fees are mandatory, but some aren’t, and you don’t want any of those add-ons that aren’t necessary. Look at all of the dealer-installed options and what they might cost. If you don’t need them, make sure they aren’t part of the contract.

Fear of Walking Away
The word “no” has the power to save you money. You might really like the car you’re looking at, but if the deal isn’t right, don’t take it. Have a few different vehicles you’d be willing to buy, and visit more than one dealership. Shopping around and expanding your options gives you the power to walk away from a deal that doesn’t work for you.
