Fraudsters find new ways to impact millions of people every year. While no one is immune from fraud and identity theft, there are a few simple steps you can take to avoid some of the biggest traps. Here are some practical tips to help you stay a step ahead!

Keep personal information confidential. You should never give out personal information over the phone, through email or over the Internet unless you initiated the contact and know who you’re dealing with. Don’t include personal information like credit card details in regular, unencrypted email or enter it on an unencrypted website as your information won’t be secure. When you do enter your information online, be sure to check the URL of the page: if it begins with “https” or appears green in the address bar, you’re on a secure site.

Report it. Scams affect every part of life and can occur in a variety of ways, ranging from Chain letters, Charity scams, Dating scams, Debt relief scams, Advance fee scams and more. The best way to protect yourself is to report any suspicious activity. The U.S government recommends that you first file a report with your local police department. You should also contact your state consumer protection office and your credit union when you first see signs of suspicious activity!
