When was the last time you took a close look at where your money is going? If it’s been a minute, now is a good time to figure out what you’re overlooking. Here are 6 surprisingly effective ways to help you spend less, and save more!
Warm up (without the heat). With no signs of it warming up, it’s safe to say that we are stuck with winter, at least for another month or so. As the cold lingers on, practice these free ways to warm up your home:
- Take advantage of solar heating. Open your curtains during the day to allow the sun to naturally warm your home; close the curtains at night to trap in the heat.
- Try not to use your kitchen or bathroom fans. While they suck out steam from cooking and unwanted smells, they also suck out hot air that should be kept inside during these colder months.
- Use your ceiling fans. As heat rises, you can use your ceiling fans (in reverse) to bring it back down to floor level.
- Dress warm. If you’re walking around your house in t-shirt, there’s no wonder your heating bill is monstrous! Dress in layers before you even consider turning that thermostat up.
Treat yourself. The best way to avoid splurges? Treat yourself every now and then! As a way to reward your frugality, make it a point to splurge every once in a while, instead of on a regular basis. For example, if you have an annual ritual to enjoy a spa weekend at least once a year, you might not feel as tempted to splurge on multiple weekend getaways throughout the remainder of the year.
Use cold water. The most expensive part of doing laundry is using warm or hot water. If you opt to wash your clothes using cold water – you could save about 50 cents per load! While this may not seem like a lot, it really adds up throughout the year.
Only use SeaComm or CO-OP ATMS. As a SeaComm member, you are not charged for taking advantage of SeaComm’s ATM services – but it can be difficult to avoid those annoying ATM charges when you’re traveling and forced to use a bank’s ATM. Most recently, SeaComm has become a member of CO-OP; providing you with nearly 30,000 ATMS and 5,000 shared branches nationwide, allowing you to have surcharge-free access to your money! Try the 30 day rule. If you feel like you’re on the verge of making an unnecessary purchase, gain control with the 30 day rule – write down the item and wait thirty days. If at the end of the month-long wait you decide that you still want it, then go for it!
Make your own washing detergent. If you buy name brand laundry detergent, you’re probably spending too much money (and it likely contains toxic chemicals.) But did you know that you can easily make chemical-free laundry detergent at home, and save a lot of money in the process? All you need is boiling water, bar soap, borax and washing soda.
